Review: British Paint One Coat Ceiling Paint

Source: Dulux, Taubman and British Paint web siteDulux Once Ceiling Flat, British Paint/Taubmans One Coat Ceiling paint are all claiming you only need to paint the ceiling once and the job is finish. Do you believe it?

We didn’t and we purchased British Paint One Coat Ceiling paint and put it to the test. It was a repainting job on one of our tenanted units. As always, you should read the instructions before application which is what we did.

As per the instructions, we scraped all loose and flaking paint, filled holes with filler, sanded it back then washed all areas thoroughly with sugar soap to remove any dirt and possible surface contamination.

Once the surface was completely dry, we used British Paints All In One Acrylic Sealer Primer Undercoat to prime the entire ceiling. As we were painting the ceiling, we were thinking why they can’t make paint and primer not smell at all. I must say this primer is not as bad as some of the sealer primers we’ve used. Anyway, another two hours wait for it to dry before re-coating.

Two hours later, we were finally testing the product. We were mixing the paint with a mixer attached to my cordless drill for a couple of minutes with an up and down action to have a nice consistent paint mix, this is a lot quicker than using a broad flat paddle to hand stir.

We didn’t use a synthetic roller specifically designed for one coat paint but rather used a wool roller with thick nap (20mm) that we normally used to paint brick walls, as per the instructions, we applied one liberal coat to the ceiling.

Cleaning was fairly easy because it is a water based paint, just clean it your brush and roller with water.

We’re pretty happy with the result, however, we both agreed that since the primer is white, and the one coat ceiling white is very low sheen, no matter what, the finished ceiling should be alright. Therefore, the result was as expected. My recommendation is prime the surface properly and it should be alright to use one coat ceiling paint to save time.  Has anyone else had good or not so good experiences with one coat paints?
